“Hearts and Hands Working Together” is a non-profit, 501 (c), (3) agency whose primary mission is “to provide food, shoes and clothing to the ‘undeserved’ and ‘at risk’ individuals/families, in the San Ysidro Community, and, refer them to other resources that will lessen the threat for them.” The agency’s mission is based on the principle of when people “work together” with their “hearts and hands” their mission and goals can be realized and a lot more will be accomplished! Our Tax ID # is 91-1979153.
This “grass roots” agency was founded in 1996 by Alicia Jimenez and Raquel Moran with a small group of very concerned community members who actively participated in their School/District PTA organizations. They noted that the resources for food and clothing were very limited for many families, in their immediate school community. With no funding sources, they worked with their “hearts and hands” and assisted few families with food and some clothing, using their own, limited, personal resources.
Today, with an active, strong, “all volunteer” staff/board officers and members (no paid staff to administer our agency ) “Hearts and Hands” continues to provide their services to their community families/ individuals with food and clothing. With more than 35 volunteers, our agency, presently, serves 500+ families the Second Tuesdays of each Month at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parking Lot, from 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM Monthly Food/Clothing Distributionwhere canned and dry goods, bread/baked goods, and, donated clothing are distributed to the families. In addition, the San Diego Food Bank generously donates fresh fruits and vegetables, at each of our monthly distribution.
In 2014 “Hearts and Hands Working Together” started a new Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) distribution at the Cesar Chavez/Larsen Field Park, every second Friday of the Month from 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Where canned goods provided by the SDFB are distributed to 700+ low income families.
“Hearts and Hands Working Together”, also, is a designated Emergency Food Assistance Program Distributor for the San Diego Food Bank, and, distributes food to about 275+ families once, each month and responds to the emergency needs, Mon – Fri., from 5:00 – 6:30 P.M. In addition, by appointments only, San Ysidro families (referred/self referred) are given new pairs of shoes that is donated by 3 Nike Outlet Stores. Families and Individuals are, also, referred to appropriate other services such as the San Ysidro Health Center, Casa Familiar, San Ysidro School District and the San Ysidro MAAC Project.
Through the assistance and the support of the businesses, the San Ysidro Business Association, the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, the City of San Diego and the generosity of individual donors, “Hearts and Hands Working Together” has been able to keep up with the number of families served. In the last 5 years, the needs have increased tremendously, due to the status of our economy. Special “kudos” to Sempra/SDG&E for their very generous donations that supplement the purchase of our food and services, and, Wells Fargo Bank for their cash donations that has been used to purchase blankets/, in the Winter months, for our families.
It is difficult to note the “needs” and not be able to fulfill all of them; however, “Hearts and Hands Working Together” is optimistic that with everyone “working together,” their mission can and will continue to be accomplished.
We encourage everyone to become involved in our mission, “to provide food, shoes and clothing to the ‘undeserved’ and ‘at risk’ individuals/families and refer them to other resources that will lessen the threat for them”
